Designer Anne Voigt's minimalist and tranquil home in Aarhus proves that small can be beautiful. With just 54 square meters, she and her family have mastered the concept of small-space living.

What do you do for a living?

I'm a designer and have the privilege of working on a shared project, Atelier Marée, with my childhood friend.

What does interior design mean to you?

Our home is our haven – a place to pause in the midst of a busy life. Since we live in a small space, everything is functional. Everything has its place, though my partner would probably say I have a lot of trinkets. Our living room shelves are filled with plates and pitchers we use every day.

Decorating is like creating a daily tableau, where my favorite pieces and memories come together, reminding me of the travels and experiences they’re tied to, or the people who gave them to us.

In essence, our home is a mix of aesthetic pieces and objects filled with personal meaning.

How would you describe your interior design style?

I tend to keep the colors muted but play with texture and different material surfaces. I love how soft and glossy materials absorb light differently, which is something I like to experiment with.

I also have a deep love for wood and honest, simple materials, which are a key element throughout the apartment.

Which item in your home do you cherish the most?

I have a small chair that has been with me since I first moved out of my childhood home. My grandfather made it, and I have faint memories of using it as a horse – it can be turned and flipped to serve different purposes.

As an adult, it’s been a bedside table, and now my son has started using it as a chair. Maybe one day he’ll flip it over and ride it like a horse, just like I did. That would bring things full circle.

What have you recently bought for your home?

We just returned from Athens, where I bought a clay mask from a woman with a small studio. She sold brocante vintage items alongside her own works, inspired by classical Greek statues.

What is good craftsmanship to you?

Good craftsmanship, to me, is when you can feel the thoughtfulness and time invested in an object. It’s evident in the joins and unique details, as well as in the use of durable materials and quality production. Ideally, I also appreciate multifunctional designs that can serve various purposes in different settings.

For me, good craftsmanship is also reflected in our dining table. I remember watching my partner tweak and adjust it a few times until it was perfect. Whenever I see it, I see all the hours he spent fine-tuning it.

How do you use your SÆTTER?

We’ve had our SÆTTER since the spring of 2021, and it has seen a range of displays. It’s been completely filled and at times styled more minimalistic with just a few items, but right now, it’s fully stocked with glasses and cups, as it serves as a storage piece in our small kitchen.

I love having glasses in it – even though they’re all quite different, they create a peaceful and cohesive look together.
